The route was closed during the early evening after two trains became stuck and several sections of track ballast were washed away, the route was closed. The following morning the damage was viewed and in many areas at both Dawlish and Teignmouth the line was not useable. The train was powered by Class 47197, but on route this was in trouble and the train was assisted forward from Westbury by Class 66/5 No. 66518. In fading light the train is seen crossing Cockwood Harbour. 111204-002f.jpg First Great Western operated a 'Class 47 Farewell' charter from Paddington to Penzance and return on 11 December 2004, powered in the west direction by mock-60s liveried No. 47815. As usual, the weather conditions were far from good by the time the train reached the Dawlish Sea Wall section, where the train is pictured. However, with the roof now fitted an inspection this week showed that the view was still intact. This is a view of a Class 150 passing the flats still under construction. Due to the amount of sea water blowing onto the track, Network Rail closed the down line and operated single line working over the up line. The train was led in the 'down' direction by black-liveried No. 47832 with Blue Pullman-liveried No. 47712 on the rear. The train formed of two barrier cars, six MML vehicles and one FGW coach is seen passing Dawlish. 171106_999fp.jpg On Friday 17 November 2006, FGW used the overnight sleeper stock with just three passenger saloons powered by Class 57 No. 57602 to form the 10.05 Penzance-Paddington services as far as Exeter St Davids.
